Sometimes simple implant placement can be impeded by lack of adequate bone in the jaw, presence of certain normal anatomic structures. Bone grafting-certain times a potential implant site may not offer good quantity or quality of bone to accommodate an implant of proper size. It may then become necessary to use either natural or artificial bone substitutes to build up the site prior to implant placement.

Ridge expansion- sometimes due to long time periodontal disease or wearing dentures the ridge can be narrowed to such an extent that placement of an implant can result in an unaesthetic appearance of the restored teeth. In such cases the ridge can be split and filled with a bone graft.

Nerve repositioning-sometimes due to extreme loss of bone or due to an abnormally high nerve( inferior alveolar nerve) repositioning of the nerve prior to placement of implant may have to be performed. This procedure may sometimes result in numbness of lower lip and jaw.

Soft tissue grafts- it may sometimes be needed in implant surgeries where there is a deficiency of tissues to cover the implant. These tissue grafts are usually taken from the palate or buccal mucosa.

Sinus lift surgeries- because of the down growth of the maxillary sinus in the area of the tooth loss there may be deficiency of bone to place an implant of adequate size in the upper jaw. In such cases the sinus may need to be surgically opened and grafted. In some cases an indirect sinus lift surgery may be adequate
